5 Days in Cape Town, South Africa

OTHERS

Cape Town! We were so excited to finally explore South Africa on our own feet. I was kinda nervous because Cape Town is known to be unsafe to many. The number one rule we did was to not go out at night. Usually we were back at the airbnb just before the sun goes down, which is also a downer because the sun goes down at 5 PM hence we did not have a lot of time to explore Cape Town. It was a good thing that we had a really cozy Airbnb with such perfect views, overlooking the popular hills – Table Mountain, Signal hill and Lion’s head. It is stunning. On another note, transport wise, we felt safe travelling via Uber! It is not recommended to take their public transports, even local taxis because you’ll never know if it’s a fake. There’s definitely a lot to see/do in Cape Town and we were kinda bummed that we did not have enough time here. Will definitely visit again!

Airbnb @ 16 on Bree Sky Apartment

๐Ÿ“ Book here! – $100 per night

It is located 20 minutes away from Cape Town International Airport and not too far away from the waterfront as well. We felt safe during our stay. We had to register our identity at the lobby since not just anyone is allowed to access the building. We actually left our luggages behind at the lobby since the guard said they will bring it up to us but as we went up with our host, he said, “rule no #1 in South Africa is not to leave your luggages with strangers, but it’s fine, the building guys here are trustworthy.

Day 1 – Road trip to Cape Point & Boulder’s beach

๐Ÿ“ Book here! – $72 per pax

Cape Point is about 1 hr 40 minutes ride away. We decided to take the city sightseeing bus because it felt like a safer option for us. Totally recommend! We got to see African penguins at Boulders beach and they are super adorable. We also saw some naughty baboons at Cape Point. At Cape Point, you can choose to hike up or take the Funicular up which cost around $7 SGD. It is often referred as a place where the Indian and Atlantic oceans meets although we could not really see the separation.

Day 2 – Big 5 Marine Tour

๐Ÿ“ Book here! – $189 per pax

We had a road trip to Gaansbai which is about 2 hours drive away just to see the big 5 marine life in South Africa. We actually had to reschedule due to bad weather conditions (hence be prepared to be flexible with your days in Cape Town). We got to see Southern whales, humpback whales, sunfish, fur seal, shark and penguins. Unfortunately we did not see the dolphins this time round! (PS: It is so hard trying to take a good pictures of the humpback whales when they are rarely bridging. It is so hard to appreciate their beauty just on the surface! It would be so nice to see them beneath the waters, hopefully one day!)

Day 3 – Sight seeing in Cape Town

Table Mountain

๐Ÿ“ Tafelberg Rd, Cape Town, 8000, South Africa

The cable car to the mountains cost about $37. Did you know that Table Mountain is now the New 7 Wonder of Nature of the world? It is stunning! The name of the mountain explains it all, since it is flat like a table. Check the weather forecast before going probably, it’s best to go when the skies are clear otherwise all you can see from the mountain is clouds. We were a bit lucky to have a quick view of Cape Town before the clouds came over covering the city.

4 Days Private Safari Tour with Africa on Foot

SOUTH AFRICA

Going on a Safari Tour has been one of my top bucket-list thing to do. I am so grateful for the opportunity to cross this out of my bucket-list! It is definitely not going to be my last either, I would love to go on another Safari Tour somewhere else like Kenya or Tanzania. Seeing the animals in the wild felt unreal. Loved seeing them out in the wilderness, just being free.

We decided to go on a 4 days 3 nights Private Safari Trip with Africa on Foot which cost me about $1.5k SGD. It is pretty costly but we did not mind paying for the experience. We have an early morning game drives/bush walk and game drives every evening, plus food is inclusive too. It also includes my transportation from Johannesburg to National Kruger Park (which is like 6 hours drive away). How much time do you need in a Safari really depends. The park is huge (19,485 kmยฒ). Twenty six times bigger than Singapore. The chances of meeting all the animals are endless. We were lucky, because we managed to find all the Big 5 animals during our 3 night stay. Some could see everything in a day, some could not see everything in 4 days so it really depends. The best thing to do is to lower your expectations. Come with an open mind. Let it come to you.

DAY 1 – GOING TO THE SAFARI

Our day started as early as 6 am because we had an early drive to Klasarie Private Nature Reserve. The drive was alright, we had a few Pit stops for brunch/toilet breaks. By the time we reached Africa on Foot bound, it was around 2 pm so we settled down. Not long after that we’re ready to hit the road again. Off to our first range rover ride! I loved every bits of it, such an exciting feeling to be sitting in an open vehicle looking for wildlife animals! The first time seeing the animals are always the most exciting. We saw elephants, zebras, hippo, leopard, African buffalos, springbok, hyena on Day 1. Not sure if I am forgetting anything else :’) Our first sunset in the savannah was the best, just watching the sky as it changes its color.

DAY 2 – OUR FIRST BUSH WALK!

Of course we had an early start to the day. Our schedule in Africa on foot is pretty fixed. We were told to be ready by 6:30 am in the morning to get ready for our drives. We had a good weather that day so consider ourselves lucky! Our rangers decided to look out for elephants by foot. It was a really refreshing walk. While we were looking out for elephants, our rangers told us to kept quiet and stopped us from walking. Little did we know there were a mom and baby rhino hidden behind the bush not far away from us. Thankfully they ran away in another direction (not at us, phew) but it happened in a blink of an eye so my camera were not fast enough to capture the moment (Girl, I wasn’t ready). We kept walking and finally saw a male giant elephant! He wasn’t very welcoming so we did not stay for very long. Being on foot and on the same ground as the wild elephants felt out of the world. Actually everything about this trip felt surreal for me. On our way back in our range rover ride, we met more females and baby elephants just munching on the trees away. Did you know that 90% of the naked tress in the Savannah were actually eaten by the elephants? Did you know that we can also make fire with elephant poop?

We also met two lovely ladies from Netherlands and another two ladies from Italy! Such a fun group for our first night in the Safari. Our evening game drive was quite an exciting one. We saw most of the animals we saw on the first day. But the most memorable thing that happened was probably during our tea break. We were surrounded by hunting hyenas. They eat bones. Hyenas have extremely strong jaws and compared to their body size, they are one of the most powerful of the mammals. Our rangers just told us to stay calm and the most important thing to do is not to run if they come to you, otherwise they might mistaken you as their prey. For now, I will label them as nice, since I did not witness them attacking the people around me.

We also decided to sleep in the tree house tonight (just because it is probably going to be a once in a lifetime experience). After dinner we got ready to head to our tree house and I was surprised that we actually took the range rover instead of walking. Our rangers said that it’s because it’s dark and there are a lot of night animals so if we were to walk, she needs to bring the gun. Oh yes, they brought the gun during our morning bush walk too. Just in case if you need it since we are on foot. We were given a walkie talkie, a torch light and a horn. Quoting what my ranger said, “If there’s in a hyena on the second floor, use the walkie talkie to contact us.” She’s probably just scaring us, but obviously it is possible. I was not too worried because our treehouse were surrounded by wired fence. Though you can never be too complacent because anything can happen in the wild. There is a huge field of bush right in front of us in our treehouse but we did not see anything exciting. Spotted a few eyes, it’s probably just springbok so we just shine our light away because they are not night animals. Shining the light on them will just blind them and they will be at a disadvantage to run away if night animals are around to hunt. Not long after we decided to call it a night (we were obviously knackered by then). Safe to say we slept peacefully.

DAY 3 – 2 GAMES DRIVES IN A DAY

The morning weather were not very lovely today. We have decided to take the game drive instead of our regular morning bush walk. Bush walk is sure fun, but walking means lesser chance of seeing more animals since your leg can only cover so much within a period of time. While going on a game drive, you can cover more, so your chances of seeing more animals are higher. We had so much fun during our morning game drive. We even saw the giraffes! The most memorable time was during our tea time by the dam. There were no animals in sight when we got there. But not long after we saw a school of elephants walking towards the dam. It was funny, because I was just talking to my friend about how exciting if we were to see elephants playing by the water since we had seen them eat the trees so much. And here they are having a good tea time session with us. Can you tell how excited we got? They didn’t spend a-lot of time there, probably less than 30 minutes (honestly I did not keep track of the time) but they were ready to move before us. I haven’t even finish my tea! They were ready to make a move but we were kinda in their way, so they just stood there in a line. Our rangers were like “It’s time for us to go!” so here we are moving back a little with our tea cups still in our hands as we watched them walked away.

During our evening game drive, our rangers tried to look for lions but we did not have much luck. But we had a good view of the sunset by the lake during our tea break session. I was asking my rangers if it’s possible for me to fly a drone but he said we could get in trouble so I did not. When we were back at our chalet for dinner, we could actually hear the lions hunting. It would be so fun to hit the road again but nope, it doesn’t work that way haha.

DAY 4 – EPIC LAST GAME DRIVE

As per usual, we gathered at 6:30 am in the morning and we were told that we have a good chance of seeing the lions today. It was extra cold that morning. It was a little foggy and suddenly, here comes a group of baby lions! Its mom have left them behind to go hunting. They probably had just finished a meal because they looked cozy and at peace. We were so glad that we managed to tick off the last Big 5 animals from our list!

Overall, a safari experience is definitely an out of the world experience. It is not the same feeling having to see the animals in the zoo. Seeing them in the wild in their natural habitat feels extra special. Knowing how they can be free as much as we can. Indescribable feeling. I’d definitely recommend everyone to try it once in their lifetime.

Big shout of to Africa on foot for taking good care of us and making us feel safe despite being in the wild! So much love for Africa โค

1 Day in Johannesburg, South Africa

SOUTH AFRICA

It has been 3 months since coming back from my 2 weeks vacation & a little birdie told me to update my blog. (Hi there!) So before I start forgetting about all the little details about my trip, let’s get started! It felt surreal to be finally travelling again since Covid happened. I am so grateful for a chance to visit another continent in the world, Africa!

Johannesburg was just a pit stop for us. We had 1 free unplanned day. We’re not so sure about venturing the city by ourselves so we had book our own private tour to Apartheid & Soweto village via our hotel. It cost us $95 per pax (Funny thing is I don’t remember it being this expensive). You can probably get it at a cheaper rate with proper research or via other channels. It was an unplanned free day for us so we decided to just go for it, plus it was pretty last minute. If you didn’t already know, Johannesburg has a reputation of high crime levels, in fact more dangerous than Cape Town.

I did not do any research about Afrikaans history prior to my trip so going for this tour was actually an eye opening experience. Along the way our tour guide shared many stories about their culture. Did you know that Johannesburg altitude is high? They say they lived longer. To find a wife in Africa, a man have to gift cow(s) to the future bride. Along with other random facts which I may or may not have forgotten.

Apartheid museum

๐Ÿ“ Northern Park Way and Gold Reef Rd, Johannesburg, 2001, South Africa

What is Apartheid? It is actually a system created to address racist issues. As we all know, in the past white don’t get along with blacks. There are 7 pillars of Apartheid: democracy, equality, reconciliation, diversity, responsibility, respect and freedom.

They had this ID which defines who they are and where they belong. Did you know that there were a few non-whites whom actually became white? They passed the test by putting a pen on their head & if the pen doesn’t falls off, then they’re white.

Nelson Mandela’s home

If you look closely enough in the forth photo, you can actually see holes in the wall due to gun shot when Nelson’s home were attacked by the police. In the 7th photo, there are holes on the ground due to the barrier built by Nelson’s wife to protect their children from the gun shots/attack.

Hector Pieterson was one of thousands of kids (& youngest) who marched in protest against Afrikaans (anti British) in 1976. The protest became violent and led to days of rioting. Hector was one of the first to be killed.

CRUISE TO NOWHERE (COVIDโ€™19)

OTHERS

Bored of staycays? Yes. Need a break? Also yes. My friend & I had booked for a cruise trip in November. I have been to cruise once when I was younger, but I was too young to remember how the experience was like. We decided to go with Dream cruise because they offers halal friendly food options. I guess one thing to take note from the cruise trip is that, apart from your booking payment, you still have to pay a gratuity fee of $24 per night/per person. All the other activities and food are pretty much paid off (some activities are not free).

Few weeks before your trip, you will receive an email from the cruise company for online check-in. Once done you will receive your ART test appointment timing. I was allocated to the 11am slot, which is for the first group. Test results were out in 30 minutes. It was a pretty smooth process. The immigration gate opens around 12:30 (I had to wait longer since I am in the first group) and the ship was ready for boarding by 2 PM. Checking out was really smooth as well, it was all done in about 30 minutes. We stayed in deck 10 and they have cleared the floor around 10:30 AM.

Food options was just average to me. You can never go hungry in the cruise as there are 24/7 snacks bar. On my first night the snack choices were not the best though. It can be better, but it is not the worst!

Our balcony stateroom was on the east side of the ship so we managed to catch the beautiful sunrise on the first morning. The bed is so comfortable, and the room is SO cold. It is quite spacious for 2 pax. There was nothing new to watch on the TV, but good thing is I brought my Nintendo Switch games just in case we have some free time to play.

Shows: there are 2 free shows which is available for booking once you are onboard. The slots run out pretty fast so it is advised to have the app handy before you board. If you did not manage to book any slots, I believe they do accept walk ins based on the availability. I’d totally recommend going for Jolly Holly, their performances are exceptional.

Free activities: Rock climbing, table tennis and mini golf are available for booking upon walk in (on the same day itself), swimming/jacuzzi slots are open for 1 hr per day upon availability, ropes courses & zip-line are available on walk in, waterslides operates for 2 sessions per day and it is available upon walk in as well; we went there around 12pm and there were no queue at all!

Staycation in Singapore during Pandemic (Covidโ€™19)

OTHERS

It has been 2 years since Covid started. Infection rates in Singapore had increased ever since the measures were lighten as we slowly transition to ‘endemic’ phase. A couple of my friends were tested positive once. I was once or twice, were in contact with a Covid patient but thankfully, I was not infected. Not too sure how this virus spreads honestly. If you get it, you get it. Sooner or later this is going to be a norm, and eventually everyone will get it. It is a good thing though that almost everyone in Singapore are vaccinated – though we are not sure how much longer can the vaccine sustain. I feel like the best we can do now is to take safety precautions; especially if you are going to have a group gathering and such – it is better to get ART tested first. At times like this, it is so SO important to be responsible. Enough of the covid rant, let’s get started on the topic of this post: staycation.

Of course, I had a couple of staycations during this tough times (it is the most we can do to unwind from our stressful busy life). Honestly I am tired of staycations by now, lol. Can’t wait till we can actually start travelling again, well as a matter of fact we can now travel with the vaccinated travel lanes options open – but it is still rather early a.k.a risky to travel hence I shall wait a little longer and observe the situation. Below are the list of hotels I have been to during this Covid period. Try to make a guess which is my ultimate favourite hotel based on my list below :’)

Last trip of 2019: Going back to Bangkok!

THAILAND

Bangkok, it was nice seeing you again! The first time I went here was the first time I attempted at ‘vlogging’ and looking back, damn I was and am still cringey! Not to worry, those videos are now set to private. Good times though! This time, it was less of a sight-seeing trip but more to shopping and eating. We stayed in Hotel Tranz which is located at Phaya Thai BTS Station. What I loved about the hotel was the location – it is very accessible from BKK airport. It is just 1 train ride away hence super convenient when travelling with luggages around.

I think Bangkok is one of the places where by you walk till you can’t anymore, literally. I walked as much as 25k steps daily while in Bangkok. My legs were dying. Thank goodness for the amazing thai massage at Relax Spa appointment that was booked for my last day. It was amazing! They even served mango sticky rice after my session. It is SO THAI! Road trippin’ in Melbourne via a Caravan

AUSTRALIA

Flying to Australia for the first time. When my family asked whether or not I would like to join them to Melbourne for a road trip, I hesitated. Don’t get me wrong, I do love to visit Australia at some point of my life but I did not consider it to be in my top bucketlist. Nonetheless, upon researching more about Melbourne and knowing that we will be travelling with a motor-home, I agreed upon this adventure! It turned out to be the best decision ever – just because I am not the driver! Haha, just kidding. We were travelling with 2 caravans, hence we communicated with each other via walkie talkie and I had to be the commander for the trip; leading the way in case our GPS was not working well. So yeah, that was “fun“.

The idea of travelling via a caravan is so exciting yet in actual fact, it can be ultra exhausting. First, you need to plan where you will be parking your caravan for the night and it is of course not free! Secondly, you have to be in charge of the battery – making sure that your caravan is connected to the power for the night! Thirdly, you need to clean your toilet everyday – topping up water and throwing waste away. Next, you also have to top up your kitchen gas if you do cook frequently. Also most importantly, like any other vehicle, do not forget to top up your petrol too! Another thing to be cautious of when travelling on a caravan is making sure that all your items are not left on the counter because …it can get messy when you are driving on the road. Hence, you MUST lock all the drawers before driving off. Mind you, sometimes the drawer may still get out of hand even when you have already locked them – this usually happens when you are driving at a sharp turn junction. Alright, enough of the Dos and Don’ts, let’s get on the itinerary.

Singapore โžก Melbourne

I flew to Melbourne with Emirates at noon Singapore time and had arrived in Melbourne at Midnight. The best seats to choose on the flight at this timing was to definitely sit on the right side, which I did not. A blunder, I know. I did get to see a peek of the gorgeous sunset though! Since our flight landed late at night, it was a little too late to collect our motor home hence we checked in at the Park Royal Hotel to rest for the night.

Day 1 – Collecting our Motorhome

It took us about 2 hours to go through the check in process. It was so busy when we arrived at the Britz office. The rental cost us $1633.35 for 6 days with Britz Inclusive package. For more information, you can visit Britz website.

5 Days in Bali, Indonesia

INDONESIA

Bali, it is definitely one of the most overrated holiday destinations I know. I finally had the chance to visit this paradise everyone was raving about last October. Not going to lie though, it was not the best beach vacay I have ever had. I guess this is the aftermath of experiencing an epic trip in Cebu – it is hard to beat that experience. You know what I would love to do in Bali next time? Experience living in the sea for a couple of days. Anyone up for the adventure, let me know. Anyway, here is what I did in Bali in 5 days!

Day 1 – Exploring Nusa Ceningan

We had book a return pick up service from Airport to the hotel and it cost us $53 SGD per person. At the island itself, we explore the land by foot. Blue lagoon and secret beach is about 15 minutes walk away from the hotel. Le Pirate is definitely a cute and simple hotel, with an outdoor shower. It was a decent stay other than the fact that the roosters were making noise all night. I would not mind coming back here just to get away from the bustling life.

1. Le Pirate Hotel

Day 2 – Exploring Nusa Penida

We have made a booking to Nusa Penida from our hotel, and it cost us about $100 SGD which includes land transport at Nusa Penida and snorkeling. I was most excited about today, over the fact that I get to swim with manta rays which is my bucket list but ended up getting disappointed because it was not manta season. I would definitely recommend getting a driver to explore Nusa Penida because the roads are very bumpy, also this island is huge!

5. Snorkelling at Gamat Bay, Crystal Bay

6. Kelingking Beach

๐Ÿ“ Bunga Mekar, Nusapenida, Klungkung Regency, Bali 80771, Indonesia

Day 3 – Exploring Ubud

We had booked 1 day private chauffeur with Klook which cost us $42 per car. I was looking forward to visit the rice terrace however was kinda disappointed upon arrival. I think I have seen way too many pinterest worthy pictures of this place that I have high expectations. Maybe I didn’t had the best experience because to be fair, we did not explore the whole place due to the heat. I do recommend trying out their teas and coffees at Uma Pakel!

What to do in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

MALAYSIA

Craving for a short get away but don’t want to splurge on flights? Just book a $60 bus ride from Singapore to KL! Staying in serviced apartment via Airbnb is affordable too! But, the concern is, what to do in KL besides cafe hopping and eating to your heart’s content? Thankfully, my friend did some research and have discovered a few interesting places to go to up your Instagram game (just kidding). Little did I know, there are a couple of places in KL that is perfect for photography purposes!

1. Selfie Museum (NOW CLOSED)

๐Ÿ“ 2.28, Level 2, Fahrenheit 88, Jalan Bukit Bintang, 55100, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Opens daily: 10 am – 10 pm
Ticket price: RM20 (Adult) / RM10 (Child)
Website: https://www.selfie.com.my/

It was indeed the selfiest place on earth! There were a total of 9 dessert-themed rooms full of interactive exhibits created for a mini photo-shoots.

2. French Village at Berjaya Hills

๐Ÿ“ KM 48 Persimpangan Bertingkat, Karak Expy, Bukit Tinggi, 28750 Bentong, Pahang, Malaysia

No driving license? No problem! Just head to Berjaya Times Square one day in advanced to get your shuttle bus tickets to Colmar Tropicale! Head over to the hotel lobby to inquire at the reception counter on where you can get the tickets. For more info, please visit their website at http://www.colmartropicale.com.my/contact-us/shuttle-service/ In my opinion, a day trip to Berjaya Hills is enough because there is not much activity to do.

3. Astaka Morocco

๐Ÿ“  Presint 1, 62000 Putrajaya, Malaysia
Opens daily: 9 am – 12 pm, 2 pm – 5 pm (Closed on Tuesday)
Ticket price: RM3

Want to go to Morocco but could not afford it? Fret not! You can now pay a visit to Astaka Morocco museum to see Moroccan architecture. It is just a 40 minutes ride away from the city. Travelling via Grab from the city centre cost us about RM40 per trip. Honestly, it is such a beautiful place to do photo-shoot! Unfortunately, you are not allowed to take pictures in the museum unless special arrangements were made. It is still worth the visit though, because there are many potential scenic places outside the museum for your pictures!

4. Skydeck KL Tower

๐Ÿ“   Kuala Lumpur, 50250 Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Opens daily: 9 am – 10 pm
Ticket price: Get it via Klook for cheaper price!

The best time to spend time in the tower is just before sun goes down – which is around 6 pm until 8 pm. You get to take pictures when it is still bright outside, followed by watching the sun goes down, followed by gazing at the night city lights. My favorite part was when the sky turns from pink to purple; simply breathtaking.

So that concludes what I did during my 5 days visit to Kuala Lumpur. Who’d knew that there are many interesting places in KL to be explored?
